In the garden you know exactly what type of arbor is required, below. Arched, 3' deep, iron, creating an enfilade punctuated with an urn on plinth matching the one below.
Repetition, is one of your strongest design tools in the garden. Maximized with interior repetition.
.
Color & pattern, very easy to copy from this room into the garden.

I never tire of a client saying, "I love that." Exactly, I copied it from their interior. Yes, it's that simple.

Pic via Cote de Texas. Why an iron arbor to match? Contrast. Yet, if the client wanted heavy cottage style I might do the wood.

Great Advice! So true! The outside must reflect the inside and vice a versa. Why do so many have a hard time grasping that? I have a friend who has a lovely ranch cottage built in the 50's with great details like a stacked stone fireplace. She insists and does add Tuscan elements to it. Makes me want to cry. She ripped out the original solid wood paneling and replaced with dry wall. I would have painted that wood white so fast...it would have been charming! Outside she has added a rustic pergola and huge fireplace. They are beautiful but they do not go with her house! She just spent $30,000 renovating her kitchen in a tuscan style. I advised her to go more traditional and fitting her home. She ignored me. She will hate that kitchen in 10 years. She doesn't even know that it's already out of style.
Now on the other hand...my other friend who has a similar home listened to me and did not put travertine in her kitchen like she wanted. She put in white subway tile and LOVES it! She thanked me over and over because she would have done the travertine and not liked it.
I don't know why my friends ask my opinion and then ignore my opinion. Yes, my house is very cottage-y but my house is a cottage! If you live in a mid century house...I'm going to steer you towards a mid century feel.
I'm glad your clients listen.
Nita...you SO nailed it. franki
