On the Porch: Table Toppers

The clay in her county is well known for its pottery.

Her bouquet of comfrey reminds me I've never once planted it myself.

The wicker arrived from a local junk shop a couple of summers ago.
.
Her childhood and most of adulthood were in subdivisions yet on acreage she wields latent powers, including the placing of livestock fencing.
.
Profoundly miserable in the subdivision, what if she didn't follow her soul to this acreage, instead going to a therapist?

Pics taken at jobsite this month.  Watching her is to bear witness.  Providence in action.  Humbling.

Desk & End Table on the Porch

Perfect place to get a few things done on the laptop, a quick lunch, perhaps a grandchild coloring?

Maybe it's only an extra chair.

A magic table:  end table AND desk.

Pics taken yesterday at jobsite.  Did you notice the garden view in the top pic?  Decades of experience, studies in historic gardens across Europe, college, seminars, knowing  simplicity is the 'skill'. .

Meadow vs Foundation Plantings

16 foot ceilings are the secret.

The house, I hope it's small, has surprised me.  When I find the right 5 acres, I will build it.

However, no green meatball foundation plantings for me.

Luxury is having your home set in a meadow.

Pleasure grounds flirting richly, unfolding a narrative.

Beware: These Pillows Need Worthy Backdrop

Few gardens could backdrop these pillows.

Not the focus, yet complete dominance, this garden looks 'not done'.
.
Heads-up, by the time a garden is this simple it is 'totally done'.
.
Joseph W. Tyree did the landscaping.
.
Perhaps the slipper shoes demand the pillows & garden as backdrop.  This man exudes something quite rare amongst his age group, happy self-confidence.
.
More about man & house,  Architectural Digest.  Enjoy.

Beware, even, the cushion/pillow shelves at discount stores.  They may be cheap but they will steal your entire garden/deck/views.

Is Your Garden 'Art' on the Wall?

Every garden view should be 'art' on the wall.

2+ decades ago I visited a garden in Greensboro, NC with every window view taken into consideration.  Every window.
.
Again, something learned from an 'uncredentialed' gardener changing the direction, forever, of how I design landscapes.  Not once during college did any instructor mention being inside a client's home to design a garden correctly.

Gardener's Kitchen

This, below, has already gone to my contractor.

A gardener's kitchen.

All about the garden view.
.
Contractor's response, "You can't afford to lose cabinet space."
.
Whatever.
.
Sitting in the kitchen now, I'm imagining how much more garden I will see.  Wind, birds, blooms, snow, rains, fall foliage, exfoliating bark, berries....
.

Pics via Cote de Texas.  Of course new counters & painting too.  Kitchen is almost 3 decades, my starter kitchen, a relief to discover its next chapter.

Front Porch: A Way to Test Design

Good design is pretty, comfortable, affordable, leverages activities and your spirit.
.

Good design is also 'testable'.

With a camera.  Can you take spur-of-the-moment pics and they are worthy of a magazine, catalogue or book cover?
.
If you must 'style' your pics so far from how you truly live in the space you're not done designing the space.
.

Pics Susanne Hudson's front porch, last month, which is mere feet from a busy road.
.
Last weekend a client showed me a pic of her baby granddaughter in the garden.  It could have been used in a magazine for toddlers. A quick snap without thought of the background beauty.  And that was intentional in the Garden Design.  The client 'got it' after the pic.  Granddaughter, grandma & designer....trinity of happy!

2 Questions for Patios, Decks, Porches

Graduating with another degree, horticulture, I was fully aware creating the gardens of my soul had yet to be discovered.

Luckily Penny McHenry came into my life.  She invited me to lunch the first evening we met.  A lecture meeting with packed audience we were in the 3rd row.  I plopped next to her & knew she wasn't amused.  We began talking, garnered a stern glance from the speaker then talked so long the security guard asked us to leave, the building was closing.
.
In her garden, the next day, one of the biggest theatrical curtains of Garden Design opened when I saw her back deck.  From the first glance I knew.
.
When looking at a patio there are 2 questions.  Is this space so wonderful I must see inside the house?  Is this space so wonderful I must see the garden?
.
Ironic.  Patios, porches, decks, & their styling, were not mentioned during my degree program.  Nor any symposium I had ever attended.
.
Penny did it from innate talent.
.
Innately I knew, copy good ideas.

Curb Appeal Before Entering the Front Porch

Don't tell me 'welcome' with letters on a sign or doormat, show me.

The curb appeal of this tiny frontyard says, "Yes, you want to see the porch, inside the home, and the rest of the garden."

And you're experiencing the potency of the garden's color trinity, without being aware.

Adore the smartness of cast stone urns filled with cast stone flowers & fruits.
.
Get the color trinity?  Green, brown & white.  Trinity of the ages.  Low maintenance, serene, elegant.
.

Pics shot in Susanne Hudson's garden last month.  Girlfriend is serious!  Curb appeal + front porch fabulosity.  We are working on a book together and planning another spend-the-night this month.

Desk in the Garden

Don't you adore hearing a new strange fact, and know it's true immediately?

Every garden needs a desk.

First shared with me by Susanne Hudson.
.
Have adored sharing it for years.  Zero dissent.

How to Place Sofa Table

Sofa table, below, rather formulaic with pair of lamps & table toppers.

Laughably obvious!  Yes, put the sofa table outside.

Pic taken this month in Susanne Hudson's garden.  She has a totally warped way of looking at & doing the obvious.  Lamps on 24/7.   Don't know where to start furnishing your garden?  Sofa table seems easy.

What's the View from Your Porch Door?

Diffusing the view, Kimberly Queen, below.  Tolerates full baking sun or part shade, and she's not a shaggy mess unlike the Boston fern.

On perfect axis with the porch door, below, she diffuses the view in too.  Aka, double axis.

The lattice?  Regular, common, off the shelf, a disaster for any home but, in context, understandable here.  This home was rescued and is the Cultural Arts Center in Douglasville, Georgia.
.
Back to the lattice.  For pennies more special order panels with thicker wood slats, they look custom.
.

The fern stand is real, and almost a century old.  Been decades since it held a fern.  Pics taken earlier this month at the Penny McHenry Hydrangea Festival in Douglasville, GA.

The Table You Want on Your Porch

Rescued: door, windows, stool.

Love the sexy lines of this stool, we chose it first so more galvanized accouterments placed for balance.

Dinner table, floral arranging table, potting table, styled table.  Whatever, they're FREE.

During the Penny McHenry Hydrangea Festival we caught many pairs of friends sitting, visiting, enjoying the breeze, loving the views.
.
Susanne Hudson & I sat in the chairs admiring our work.

Pics taken earlier this month at the Penny McHenry Hydrangea Festival.  The porch got bigger with the furniture added.  Why?  More function added along with the beautiful forms.   How did Susanne & I get the porch done, we schlepped everything you see into place.

No magic minions.

Passion is the magic.

Trumeau on the Porch

Century old teller window, below.  Susanne Hudson saw it differently & made a trumeau.  Placed upside down, mirror installed,  a few inches cut off for scale & equally historic molding applied.

Kimberly Queen fern, below, tolerates blasting sun.  Vintage white baskets, below, $4 total, thrift store.

Faux bois table in the back corner?  Found in junk shop under $10 and it's made of resin.  Sprayed, who knows?

.
Apologies for  vulgarities about filthy lucre, it's in defense of my profession.  How many more times must I hear, "I can't afford a garden."  Stool, old windows, door etc....were rescued, aka free.
.
By good accident Susanne's reflection is in the mirror.

On the Porch with Drapes

Nothing was here, below, a few days ago.

The porch, below, when we began.

Covered Screened Porch

Garden view, daybed, lamps, table w/chairs, blue/white, cozy, stuffed with amenities.  Staycation is too small of an idea for this room.

Flowing from garden to kitchen with doors, & views from master bedroom and living room.

This couple is always doing something with their grown children & spouses with grands.

Tipping point for the TV is obviously the grands.

Daybed, slounging chairs + a table with chairs for projects/computer?  Perfect trinity.
.
Garden & Be Well,  XO Tara
.
Pics same house/garden as previous post.  It's obvious Susanne Hudson has put her skills here.   I have a strong weakness for grandparent/grandchild relationships.  Mine still fills me with incredible strengths.

Where to Start

Don't know where to begin your Garden Design?

Begin with a table outside.  You must eat.
.
Then, begin with layers of green: trees, shrubs, groundcovers.  Each suited for your zone-sun-shade-parched-moist areas.
.
With the greens add focal points on axis from window views.
.
You've just created a garden in vanishing threshold with your home.

Water & Creativity

Excellent reading venue, below.  Have recently been bathing with Wendell Berry, Nicky Haslam & a woman who's been living The Dirty Life.

Tub views are a concern.  Behind the draperies, below, the shower.

More views soon.  Decisions finally made for the large blank wall, alas, men needed for execution.
.
Found a huge vintage Eastlake mirror, huge, $30, it will reflect a garden view.  Timing, it had just arrived into my favorite junk shop.
.
Through the decades, as I've stepped out of the shower, complete visions of the current Garden Design appear in my mind.  As if by Messenger, the Muse.
.
A better drug than the $30 score.
.
Do you do this too?  Create a garden & home to leverage your thoughts.  Ideas to spur action steps.

Hiding Ugly Views

Pleased as the Cheshire Cat.  One of my chief accomplishments.  Do you see why?

A few feet away from my house, above, is a neighbor's house.
.
Yet the view is a Woodland Garden: contorted filbert, hydrangea, camellia, azalea, hosta, fern, helleborus, bulbs, meandering path edged with tree limbs.  And the air-conditioner.
.
It's a lifestyle choice.  Anything else, for me, is subsistence living.
.
I travel farthest in my garden.
.
Garden & Be Well, XO Tara
.
Pic taken yesterday, lovely rains all day.  The Woodland Walk is morning sun, with Tara's Trinity of the Southern Garden, azalea-camellia-hydrangea, there are blooms EVERYDAY all year.

How to Use Heads in Design

Got heads?

They're for

exterior, and

interior.
.
Have you noticed a formula for your favorite interiors & exteriors?  Not into formulas?  No worries, formulas are nothing more than Shopping Lists!  Now, I have your attention.
.
I've always been drawn to interiors with heads & ......
.
In my garden is a decades old collection of broken heads.  Most were a $1.
.
Top pic from same home/garden as previous post.  Bottom pics Nicky Haslam, via Cote de Texas article.

More than heads, bodies too.  And urns with plinths.
