Front Porch: Formal + Informal

Design Rule: Contrast.
.
A touch of the Queen + Ellie Mae Clampett.
.
Urn on Plinth + Galvanized Buckets hanging with ropes.

.
Your garden must tell me who you are before stepping inside your home.

Design Rule: Hint of Invitation

In the bright morning light, below.
.
Hint of something, saying, come-this-way.
.
Gravel path, boxwood, bench & hydrangeas.

Paths should engage: foot, eye, mind, heart.

Window Valences: In the Garden

Since the early 80's I've collected vintage garden books.  From those the memory bank retained this window arbor, below.

A delight seeing them at Susanne Hudson's historic home.

Susanne's were just moved from back to front on her carriage house receiving a new coat of paint and light renovation.
.
Yes, gardens do need exterior valences.
.
Gotta love a color theme, of course the garden valences are white.

Tool Bouquet

Tool Bouquets, below, used as sconces.
.
Begun with rot, aka beloved use, these tools are prophets with honor in Susanne Hudson's garden.
.
For centuries mankind honored the connection of tool to Earth as life sustainer.
.
Betty Friedan  wrote about the 1st generation of women disconnected from hand-to-tool-to-soil.
.
Their children would not learn the names of farm tools, their use, how to raise livestock, plant crops, cook, care take others, much less know how to feed their own spirit.  Bugs & weeds, instead of pollinators increasing crop yield, became poisoned inconveniences.
.
Their children played in clouds of malathion as evening trucks fogged mosquitoes.
.
(No time to rewrite, for this era, Friedan's work, back to tools.....)

Study Susanne's art of tool arrangement.  She's the best.

An exquisite wedding planner, Susanne treats Tool Bouquet's exactly like flower arranging.

.
It's easier to find designer clothes at a thrift store than old tools.
.
I'm always on the hunt for old tools.  And, seeing walls, inside or out, needing a Tool Bouquet.

Lamps in the Garden

The old altar table, below, has a new life.

In Susanne Hudson's garden.

Doesn't every garden need lamps, books, gravel, art, a copper wash tub, large mirror, and

hydrangeas too?

Garden Design Course: Free in a Single Pic

Under a pecan tree not much grows.
.
Tara Turf is best.

Why?
.
Increased pollinator habitat increases crop yield up to 80%.

Macro vs. Micro Design: Fail at Micro & Macro is Gone

Freshman year, 1st semester, a professor continually referenced margarine.
.
Stubborn, (skipped my senior year of high school) weeks passed before asking a classmate what was going on in class.
.
Professor's fast/thick accent was saying, 'Margin'.  Economics 101, truly.  This one incident taught me, 'Wake up baby girl it's sink or swim.'
.
This delightful man also used, macro/micro teaching methods.  Blessedly, got that immediately!
.
Micro design, below.  Susanne Hudson's new porch.
.

Seemingly insignificant, every detail, above, screams, "Pay attention to me-me-me !"
.
The porch, perfect too, is macro.
.
How important is macro vs. micro?
.
Without macro/micro, design (art) is incomplete.
.
Landscape design is all about trees, hedges, paths first.  Then flowers.
.
Human DNA loves flowers.  But, of course.  It's all about pollination.  Providence is divinely serious, with an obvious sense of beauty & humor.
.
Driving in the car, too much, to appointments I cannot abide talking on the phone.  Not for safety reasons, my mind is lost in music & gardens & happy.
.
Last week, Bonnie Raitt has been blasting her hedges in my car!  Repeat button on Thing Called Love.
.
Once the epiphany about macro/micro arrived in Garden Design it arrived in Art Understanding.
.
After listening dozens of time to, Thing Called Love, I still can't decide if it's the band or voice attracting me.
.
Then I realize it's a good garden, her macro & micro are out of the ballpark with both.
.
(Thinking in metaphor is the norm, you too?)

.
Some weeks it's Cole Porter or Sinatra or Patsy Cline or Willie or Norah Jones or Mozart or AC/DC or Foghat or Bob Seger or John Williams or Elaine Stritch or......
.
They get their macro/macro.
.
Garden & Be Well,    XO Tara
.
Pic taken yesterday at Susanne Hudson's.  Bonnie Raitt's pic from NPR.
.
Treat yourself to Elaine if you don't know her, chose Ladies Who Lunch !  Remember, it's Broadway when it was truly Broadway.
.
Don't believe in spoon feeding anyone.  Label 3 elements of macro garden design.  Label at least 1 element of micro garden design.  Answers, above.

Penny McHenry Hydrangea Festival: Don Shadow & H. 'Ruby Slippers'

Susanne Hudson & Jeri Farmer, founders of the Penny McHenry Hydrangea Festival, ( June 6-8, 2014), in Douglasville, GA, are picking up Hydrangea 'Ruby Slippers' today from Don Shadow Nursery.
.
Innocent sentence, above, if you don't know many gardeners.  Why?  The 4 names, above, are all Rock Stars of the horticulture industry.
.
Martha Stewart is so impressed with Don Shadow she has an article/video about him, here.

Lacecap hydrangea, above, at a previous Penny McHenry Hydrangea Festival tour garden.

Don Shadow, above/below.  Michael Dirr, another rock star, at a lecture decades ago, referenced Don Shadow with obvious awe/respect in his tone.  From that 'tone' I sought & attended a Don Shadow lecture decades ago too.

Don Shadow nursery, below.  It's rare to discover a man, living, comparable to the late Victorian era of wide ranging talents & interests & action.  Shadow wears that mantle with ease.

No surprise Susanne & Jeri are on their way to pick up Hydrangea 'Ruby Slippers' Don Shadow Nursery is providing (gratis) the Penny McHenry Hydrangea Festival.
.
Take some of the links, above, about Don Shadow.  He's a renaissance man of the Land, and far ahead of our era.  Alternative livestock anyone?  Has me wondering if he's friends with Wendell_Berry.  And knowing it's time for a road trip, I've never been to Shadow's nursery.

Penny McHenry Hydrangea Festival: Downsizing Conservatory to Chicken Coop Bike

Conservatory, below, I created for the Penny McHenry Hydrangea Festival with Susanne Hudson.

Susanne called last week about creating another garden together, "No."  Rains every week since mid-December have decimated my schedule.
.
I'll be contributing a bicycle doodied-up as something drug from the Chicken Coop and the witch will be riding !  (Silence, well aware when one must doody-up anything, especially past a certain age, the robot is repeating, 'Danger Will Robinson.)
.
The distance from 'no' to the Chicken Coop Witch's Bike was under a minute.  Insanity.
.
Anyway, the plan is to put the bike in my Chicken Coop when it's all over.
.
Susanne's garden will be on the tour.  MUST SEE.
.
Penny McHenry Hydrangea Festival, 7th annual, Friday - Sunday, June 6th - 8th, 2014, in Douglas County, Georgia.
.
This year's theme is, The Wizard of Oz.  There will be wheelbarrow gardens, scarecrows, vegetable gardens, tour gardens, vendor booths, judged flower show & more.

Get Your Layers of Design Right

Every home needs a desk, every barn needs a desk, every garden needs a desk.

Every design project has its layers.  Completed layers, above.  Beginning layers, below.

I will always have a job.  Always.  Why?  It's DNA to put the wrong layers in first, in a garden.
.
What are the wrong first layers of a garden design?  Pretty flowers.  All roses.  Mostly perennials.  Tons of hosta.  Yes, that list will keep me in a job, forever (forevah).  So, Tara, what's wrong with roses, perennials...., easy, no evergreen structure, zero relationship with the house & you've begun with high maintenance.
.
Desk, above, is already years in the making.  Why?  We've been creating paths, drives, focal points on axis with the interiors, planting evergreen hedges, then flowering shrubs......
.
Ironically, nurseries conspire to keep me working hard.  How?  They push annuals, lawns with needy chemicals-watering-mowing, blah blah blah & blah (are we even in the same industry?  Passed a nursery sign last week, "Kill your weeds now."  Yes, I will always have a job.)
.
What is the first layer of a Garden Design to consider?  Views, main axis, from inside your home into the garden.
.

Making it HOME

Susanne Hudson was over 24 hours getting home after Atlanta's snow storm hit.

We spoke briefly last nite and the tone in her voice when she said, "There really is no place like home.", spoke volumes.
.
When we meet-up I will get all the details.
.
Garden & Be Well, XO Tara
.
My sister, from Texas, kept me informed of Georgia's governor & Atlanta's mayoral performances on TV.
.
A learned bastard stands higher than an ignorant high priest.   —   Midrash
.
"In Judaism, the Midrash (Hebrew: מדרש‎; plural midrashim) is the body of homiletic stories told by Jewish rabbinic sages to explain passages in the Tanakh. Midrash is a method of interpreting biblical stories that goes beyond simple distillation of religious, legal, or moral teachings."
.

Midrash is quite Texas thinking.  I am Texan.  With 3 decades of Georgia under my belt buckle I know exactly what the kind Southern matriarch says in these types of governor/mayor situations, Well-Bless-Their-Heart.  Covers reams.

Front Porch: A Way to Test Design

Good design is pretty, comfortable, affordable, leverages activities and your spirit.
.

Good design is also 'testable'.

With a camera.  Can you take spur-of-the-moment pics and they are worthy of a magazine, catalogue or book cover?
.
If you must 'style' your pics so far from how you truly live in the space you're not done designing the space.
.
Garden & Be Well,    XO Tara
.
Pics Susanne Hudson's front porch, last month, which is mere feet from a busy road.
.
Last weekend a client showed me a pic of her baby granddaughter in the garden.  It could have been used in a magazine for toddlers. A quick snap without thought of the background beauty.  And that was intentional in the Garden Design.  The client 'got it' after the pic.  Granddaughter, grandma & designer....trinity of happy!

2 Questions for Patios, Decks, Porches

Graduating with another degree, horticulture, I was fully aware creating the gardens of my soul had yet to be discovered.

Luckily Penny McHenry came into my life.  She invited me to lunch the first evening we met.  A lecture meeting with packed audience we were in the 3rd row.  I plopped next to her & knew she wasn't amused.  We began talking, garnered a stern glance from the speaker then talked so long the security guard asked us to leave, the building was closing.
.
In her garden, the next day, one of the biggest theatrical curtains of Garden Design opened when I saw her back deck.  From the first glance I knew.
.
When looking at a patio there are 2 questions.  Is this space so wonderful I must see inside the house?  Is this space so wonderful I must see the garden?
.
Ironic.  Patios, porches, decks, & their styling, were not mentioned during my degree program.  Nor any symposium I had ever attended.
.
Penny did it from innate talent.
.
Innately I knew, copy good ideas.

Outdoor Kitchen

A friend gave Susanne Hudson this Hoosier cabinet a couple of years ago.

Until recently it sat gaining more rust behind her carriage house.
.
She realized it fit perfectly with her color theme: green, brown, white.  Into the garden it arrived.
.
Garden & Be Well, XO   Tara
.
Perhap this should be done in aluminum for gardens.....  Metal Outdoor Hoosier Cabinet with gas grill, the sales slip should read.  Perfect for those not wanting the huge stone aka "I've tumbled from Mars out of the last surviving Apollo Soyuz rocket payload" outdoor kitchen.
.
I was hired as the 2nd garden designer for a project because things weren't 'quite right'.  Their outdoor kitchen had been placed on perfect axis with the family room.  What a view,  stove-fridge-counter-cabinets.  Not!  It was moved to the side, which was much more convenient, and the garden became the focal point.
.
Remember well when the Russians arrived for Apollo Soyuz, they clogged up the grocery store lines when  they did not want to pay USA taxes on their purchases.  Trinkety things, lots of lipstick etc....  Of course they used USA roads, police protection, & more provided with USA tax dollars.  Even as a young teen I knew something was 'wrong'.  Their clothes could have been in a period drama from the poverty 1930's.  They moved as a pod, or school of fish,  fearful of their surroundings.  Their skin was pasty white, their hair was flat, and all eyes were huge, darting quickly, never settling, no smiles.    Many of the engineers at NASA were against this mission.  Why hand over engineering know-how?  This is obviously a Cold War memory.  The worst part was their own security detail.  Wanting to prevent defections during their stay.

Front Porch: Long & Narrow

Placing table + chairs at the 'L' of a porch must be in the helix of our DNA.

The web has enough pictures to fill a seductive hardcover coffee table book.

At the opposite end of the porch, above, more seduction, below.

Places to read, serve a meal, have conversation a basic trinity for your porch.

Front Porch Plants

Choose pots, containers, plant stands so fabulous they can remain empty, if desired.

It's obvious, below, these plant stands can remain empty or filled easily for a party or whim.

Hydrangeas are in their black plastic container, hidden with erosion control fabric.
.
This front porch is meant for reading, I'll give you something worthy: "Wendy (nothing to do with Peter Pan but short for Wendell) Howell was a grand American gone native (How yer dawgs?) whom I prized as a friend because she did not take to just anyone and made an exception for me.  She like whippets and whisky and had too many of both.  Lots of husbands (including a Roosevelt) had come and gone and she eventually settled with a lady vet in one of those Irish cottages which were rare then and now only happen on postcards.  It had an earth floor and stable doors and, in the sitting room, a vast opening for the fireplace where, if you bent down to look up the chimney, you could see a big patch of sky. At the entrance to the cottage was a sculpture of two whippets, old friends to me as they were an echo of a similar model by Gott at Chatsworth.  Wendy held a pilot's licence but luckily never offered to take me for a spin."  Debo Mitford.

Curb Appeal Before Entering the Front Porch

Don't tell me 'welcome' with letters on a sign or doormat, show me.

The curb appeal of this tiny frontyard says, "Yes, you want to see the porch, inside the home, and the rest of the garden."

And you're experiencing the potency of the garden's color trinity, without being aware.

Adore the smartness of cast stone urns filled with cast stone flowers & fruits.
.
Get the color trinity?  Green, brown & white.  Trinity of the ages.  Low maintenance, serene, elegant.

Old Tool Bouquet a la Toile

Start collecting now.

You've seen dozens of old tool bouquets on toiles across the span of your life.

Old tools in my garage are ladies-in-waiting.

Think this bit of garden is serendipitous?  Unplanned?  Needs weeding?  A trinity of wrong.  This garden room is rustic balance with its formal companions nearby.
.
Garden Design is all about contrasts.  And finding a way to hang lovely old tools.
.
Garden & Be Well,   XO Tara
