Vertical Lawn, below.
.
Few houses can withstand a clinging vine, instead, I like to use espalier woody flowering shrubs. No trellis, no wires. Hydrangea or sasanqua most commonly, but that is my southern zone.
Pic, above, here.
.
Vertical lawn, finial on the roof, and gravel lapping to the door. Yep, love that trinity.

Taking Historic into the Modern Realm
Clearly a master's touch, below, playing with history, cunningly modern.
.
Whimsy, below, in the metaphor of sanctity. What? Taking the choice, below, to walk into the garden, you must bow your head, at the shrine of espaliered trees.
.
Soon, hedging will shield the house from the outer world, flying buttresses, arc-boutant, to the nave within.
.
Is your life worth anything less?
.
Stewardship of self. In all its layers.
For good measure, several ball rooms planted into the back yard, above.
The long hallway, above at right, a promenade, lit in the manner of le jardin rustique. With hedging at the backyard too, another nave, a double cathedral built,
.
Someone, at the top of their game, above.

.
We are still tending structural outdoor necessities at our ca. 1900 American farmhouse garden. Pouring more gravel, putting in paths, lighting, plantings, must wait. One of those 'necessities' a well. Beloved has worked with the well diggers many times during his construction career, he trusts them. Good, fine. My concern is flagrantly obvious. Where will they find water? How will it affect designing the garden?
.
We chose similar lights, above, for a renovated shed. Once installed, I knew those lights would be perfect for the rest of the garden, on posts along pathways. Imagine my surprise seeing the pic, above.
.
What a day I had on the old Kubota tractor yesterday. Wounded pride, newbie mistakes. Hilarious being an 'expert' and embarking upon a new learning curve in the garden. Details sketchy, pride still ruffled.

Designing to Solve Problems: Maintenance & Snakes
From the 1st visit with the realtor to our new home, I KNEW the garden around the house would be gravel with meandering paths & terraces of gravel further from the house. And, siting of large pots with HYDRANGEA, drip irrigation of course, were paramount.
Leaving a cottage garden of 3 decades, our new garden is American Farmhouse, ca. 1900. More importantly, its design will be for our 80 year old selves. I must be 80 years old, have a gorgeous garden with zero worries about maintaining it. A garden must leverage life, not the reverse.
.
This garden, above/below, I shot late last summer. Limelight hydrangeas in the same situation as my new garden. Loving, to the center of my DNA, this garden, I had zero clue I would soon be owning similar. Alas, it's owned by a man, greatly talented, and strong. My garden must be smarter, my strength not as great. Game on.
Fearless, gravel will go to the house, similarly, below.
Not wanting formality, gravel will lap at our century old pecan trees, Tara Turf will lap at some pecan trees too.
As time passes, stone will be added to the gravel as needed. Stone, below, added for rain issues. And, I will site wisteria 'Amethyst Falls' at my front porch. Vines or espaliered trees/shrubs add lush without space.
Knowing gravel terraces will be included, below, great anticipation in wondering 'exactly' where.
Transitioning to meadow, I will add checkerboard squares, below.
Furlow Gatewood has smashed a bottle of champagne upon thousands of ships, below, with his allee of hydrangeas in pots. Copy, it's the 1st rule of garden design.
Wildly, without knowing the deeper truths of our new garden, my initial thoughts for design are more than suitable at age 80. Even life saving, for any age. Snakes, the indigenous timber rattler. Luckily have already interrupted a long king snake under the house. Lucky, yet totally scared when I saw him.
.
Gravel is the best solution, trying to be safe, in defense of snakes near the house. I got the memo, go me.
.
Sourcing pots now, I think I've found them !

Details of Design
Home for shelter, pastures for livestock, hedgerows/ornamentals for pollinators, walled gardens for fruit/vegetables, aesthetics for spirit.
.
A living, given from the land.
Touring a similar garden in France many years ago I had to ask the head gardener what he meant, "At times there were only subsistence gardeners here."
.
Portions of history, so dire, laborers were paid in food. Living the best they could in the woods.
.
Approaching this type of garden, above, from a 'fat' country, and time, in the T.E. Lawrence sense of the word, I did not see its lessons.
.
Walled gardens produce earlier & later than Nature allows, keeps wildlife/livestock out, and thieves.
.
Box hedging outside the garden walls keeps chickens out.
.
Pretty flowers? Sure, planted to be pretty, yet this reason is from a 'fat' intellect. Which was mine, until epiphany.
.
Those pretty flowers increase crop/fruit yields by 80%.
.
Suddenly, what had been merely, 'pretty', is seen as truth, 'survival'.
.
And, imagine all the lovely compost, produced on site, returning into the land.

NOTE to my gardening friends... look for changes to come.
Knew before computers/cell phones, sitting in Atlanta traffic on way to a client, 'I must reach a larger audience with the same amount of effort.' Soon after that epiphany I signed my CBS-TV, and, books contracts on the same day.
.
Then I read an article in the NYTimes about something called 'blogging'. Saved the article for a year before reading it. Studied all the blogs they mentioned, hired a computer expert they quoted, and attended a blogging seminar.
.
Blogging 2.0 has arrived, my knowledge is 1.0. A believer in copying the best historic gardens across the globe it flows into every arena of life. Watching Maria Killam grow her career/blog/life over the past 3 years made its impact. Signed up for a year's course with her blogging expert, Jon Morrow.
.
Changes will be slow, plodding is my adored method. Pulling triggers here/there is spice in the mix.

Garden Design: Aging in Place
Keep- it- Simple- Sweetie works, every time.
.
Perhaps my Garden Design rule breaker, Overdose- on- a- Theme, is how you want to garden design, in spots, instead.
If this were the only garden space, above, I had until age 89 it would be my life's goal/mission to be the sole soul maintaining this sweet garden.
.
Why? Means I would be climbing a ladder to clip the espalier fruit tree or gather fruit, in season. Oh my, the joy of clipping the low hedge and spiral. Puttering about with the pots, bulbs, mentally deciding thru the years how to out-perform the previous year/s in fabulosity.
.
If this little garden design did need a hired helper it merely needs unskilled labor twice a year.
.
Beautiful, low maintenance, mentally stimulating through the years, no chemicals or watering needed, fruit to eat, turn into jam or give away.
.
These little doorway gardens are quite common in historic gardens across Europe. History is the best teacher.
.
Lawn with foundation plantings, fertilizer, insecticides, pre-emergents, and a plop of colorful annuals twice each year? Mr. Mow-Blow-Go-Commodify-All-I-Touch on contract to arrive weekly?
.
Not for me. Mentally & spiritually soul crushing along with being bad for my physical well being.
.
Aging in Place. Make the choice in your garden for type of garden design, the beauty, mental paths and joy in the maintenance whether you do it, or a helper. Take the joy. Joy, it's always there, whether you think so or not. Take joy, Tasha Tudor's favorite saying.

How to Layer Your Garden, Save Money & Create Less Work
Espalier apples, below, layered with flowering plants increase yields to 80%.
Flowering trees, bushes, ground covers, above/below. Chosen for sequence of blooms, toughness against drought/disease/insects, position for layers, and, attractiveness to beneficial insects & song birds.
Once mature, garden layers eliminate need for mulch & fertilizers, less or no mowing, prevent weeds, and enrich soil.
What garden center wants you to have this type of garden? They cannot sell you annuals, weed killers, fertilizers, mulch. Yearly. For decades.
.
When is the last time Suze Orman saved homeowners this much money, and costly effort/time, while benefiting Earth? And put healthy, tax free, inexpensive fruit/vegetables on the table, with garden layers increasing property value while reducing HVAC expenses. Suze, who? Go me. And you.
Did you know nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium fertilizers kill soil mycorrhizal fungi & earthworms, & are toxic to the water supply?
Unexpected 'majesty', aka stateliness-dignity-beauty, in my little garden's layers, above.

Nurture Your Creativity
Ca. 1950 ranch. Front yard, house on the golf course.
.
Drawn on site. Folding table/chair moved a dozen times.
.
Don't mess with how I work.
.
How the potter molds clay, similar to how I design.
.
Feet in the garden, eyes/mind/Spirit/hand, in symphony.
.
Performing.
More regions of the brain activated, than sitting in the office on a computer.
Designing on the computer would be like playing the violin by hooking it up to wires and tapping on the computer keyboard to get the sweetest sounds played. Not !
Whence my creativity, I know. And, nurture.
Within that zone of creativity, is, I imagine, what others gain from cocaine. Don't know, never tried it. Don't need to, got better.
"Some get a kick from cocaine**
I'm sure that if I took even one sniff
That would bore me terrific'ly too
Yet I get a kick out of you." Cole Porter
Each time a plan completed the awe in time. Felt like seconds, yet hours passed. Little in life allows me to forget time, or hunger.
.
" My general formula for my students is "Follow your bliss." Find where it is, and don't be afraid to follow it.
Joseph Campbell
The Power of Myth
pp. 120, 149 "
.
.
Great fear, indeed. Campbell should have added some in your life add to that fear, not trusting the path you've chosen.
.
My father was horrified at my career choice, and embarrassed. And vocal. My engineering degree unused, the horticulture degree supporting me.
.
What I do for a living, and how I do it, are the best life choices, for me. Bucking my dad literally made me ill at times.
.
Best choice I've ever made, and the hardest.

Copy from those at the Peak of their Game
You do a thing in the garden with your full IQ, passion, energy, wallet, time. Influenced by era.
.
At my front door, above, if you know the 80's, you're seeing Horticulture magazine, covers of Smith & Hawken catalog, and articles, pages long, from House & Garden magazine.
.
So, where do you think I'm going with this?
.
History.
.
That trinity of resources, above, was from the best brains at the peak of their game.
Drenched in the poverty cycle of the Great Depression & rusticities of turn-of-the-century Lutyens/Jekyll with generous splashes remaining of the Belle Epoque.
.
So, when asked what plant should go in a certain spot or what is wrong with their lawn. I pause, long.
.
Themistocles comes to mind, " "I cannot fiddle, but I can make a great state from a little city."
.
So, when I'm told, "I want a garden but I don't have a lot of money."
.
Winston Churchill comes to mind, "....when he was asked to cut arts funding in favor of the war effort, he simply replied, "Then what are we fighting for?"
.
The best thing I've ever done in my life was to say, Yes, when my soul told me to have a garden.

Fruit at the Front Gate
At my front gate
my apple orchard with H. 'Tardiva', above, and R. triloba, below.
In person the visible is a working class neighborhood of closely set homes each with green meatball foundation plantings and lawn.

Amongst this setting my apple orchard & flowers are outrageous. A negative to neighbors. And some who love me.

Choose a Theme then Overdose
Choose a theme, Overdose on your Theme.
.
Orchard House, (aka my starter home in a working class neighborhood of cluster homes ca. 1986, today.)
Feng shui has it right about gardens, better than any garden class, 'you must be able to flow easily around your property.' Like Mrs. Wilcox I adore walking round my garden. E. M. Forster knew women. Coop, below, is mostly rescued materials. Why not boxwood, roses, itea, hydrangea, camellia, daphne? The coop is worthy.
View across the drive, below, with front loading garage. Some jurisdictions have outlawed my type of home. Too unfriendly. Garagecentric. No worries, it is my starter home, here 5 years & off to something more worthy of my magnificence.
It's obvious I had to do more growing than the garden.
I'm particularly pleased with this bit at the side of my garage, above. Though the white roses lost their graft and only the root stock is left. Reminds me of an old vicarage wall .
.
Did you see the neighbor's houses? Why would you? You've entered my world. An old cottage...... and become lost in my theme.

How Would You Solve This?
Quite nice color echo from purple furniture to loropetalum.
What would you do, below, with this 'pedestrian' landscape? Very tight budget, of course.
Shutters as the budget allows. More importantly, pruning the shrubs into espalier next to the house. I'm thinking 10' tall at most. Lush.
.
Adore solutions costing 'zero'.
.
Her solution to the improperly scaled window boxes is brilliant. Remove the wood boxes, place a stone shelf on the iron brackets and place several terra cotta pots.

Apple Espalier In A Tiny Potager
Her potager is barely 3' deep, below.
No problem planting a pair of espalier apple trees, above. They require little space. She offered some of her collards, above, but they were too pretty to pick.

I espalier a lot of things. Tried a hydrangea espalier? Lushness without effort, sasanqua's too. Sometimes, I espalier, truly due to tight space.

Vines On A Wood House?
Vines on a wood house? No. There are ways but I'm too lazy. Vine clinging to stucco/stone, below,
a case of desire from Italy. Can't do it with your wood home? No problem. Espalier a woody shrub.Whatever your zone, choose a hardy woody shrub and espalier the pruning.
Abelia, viburnum, hydrangea, camellia, tea olive, and more can be planted & espaliered.
.
Use a woody (Why woody? No wire/trellis needed.) shrub as a 'vine' on your wood home.
.
Don't buy shrubs already espaliered, buy big shrubs and prune them into espalier. On camellia, and many others, this saves over $100+.

Details in Simplicity
Simplicities: trim color is not a bright white, no window screens, interior window treatments are elegant, lights on inside, contrasting foliage textures, contrasting foliage colors, espaliered lushness upon home, well maintained, easy to maintain, urn is fabulous enough to be empty, urn is not hugging wall of home or frontdoor, classic template of centuries copied, design is elegant in winter, makes me want to see the interior, makes me want to see the rest of the garden, the landscape describes the owners. That Type
When the actor Jimmy Stewart died in 1997 the obit picture was taken in his garden. Oh, BEAUTY. I, I, me-me-me, I, I, wanted THAT type of garden. Yesterday, Rob Browder, in my garden. Finally met his children. Rob, for almost 2 decades, is the only pruning contractor I refer. Precision Pruning.
Rob's pruning is so natural it looks like G*d pruned. But, dahlings, you must write G*d a check.
Hard to imagine I knew Rob about 10 (ok maybe 4) girlfriends before he met his ex-wife. I was thrilled to finally meet his children.
And I shot them in the exact type of garden Jimmy Stewart had.
It was a tough day with Rob & his men. Deep pruning to all the Daphne. And Rosemary. So deep. I couldn't watch.
