The first time I arrived to Penny's drive, below, my car stopped as the hydrangeas lay heavy either side my hood. Had to stop. To take in what was happening. More than greeting my arrival, I was being caressed.
.
Garden Design's decadent greeting.
.
Creating entryways in a garden, perhaps the most overlooked necessity. Early into serious Garden Design study it was obvious, the more entry ways a garden has the better a garden is.
.
Penny took it to new layers.

Front Yard: Simple, More Simple
Seems so simple, below.
Pic, above, here.
More simple, below.
Pic, above, here.
.
Austerity of great depth.
.
Richness in choosing 'no'.
.
A garden must say who you are from the curb. A garden must say you really do want to come inside.
.
Amazing array of good choices, that list is not short, made for both houses & gardens.
.
How simple can you make your landscape while giving it, and your home, deep riches ?

Front Door: Changing a Few Things
'There you go again', said during a much earlier debate. Architecture, below, with a big fat garage, teensy front door, and a room at the end to finish the story. I lived in one of these homes for 30 years, the entire neighborhood stuffed with them. Built in the 80's a few newer neighborhoods outlawed the style in their deed restrictions. Why? Not street friendly, not conducive to neighbors knowing their neighbors, hulking garages with their landing strips dominate the entire neighborhood, front doors entered from their service court, not thru the 'garden'. Very little, friendly.
.
No worries, all easy fixes. Remember, I had 30 years of this particular game.
.
First, bravo the style, below, of front door. Using a ubiquitous 6 panel door would lower the roof height. The long bottom panel, below, heightens the space, then the windows add a warm welcome with a bit more height, wonderful. Have changed many front doors this way thru the years.
.
Beyond this point there be dragons, early map makers wrote at the edges of their maps.
.
First dragon I will completely ignore, it is so obvious, the huge conifer. If you say it must be kept, ok. Move it closer to the house, and keep it a bonsai espalier against the wall. Learn how to do it properly, and it will be a pleasant few minutes each year.
.
Next dragon, faux stone pavers are designed much too narrowly. Total function, zero form. Add more faux stone pavers. Left of the front path, between drive/front walk, add stone pavers entirely where there is now mulch and those ornamental grass looking things, from house to front step. Add more faux stone pavers to the right of the path, from the second front step, to the front door. Why? Creates a wider foyer, instead of this pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey front door & path. In addition, instead of a narrow rigid walking path to the front door you've opened up a large landing. Incredibly affordable too, most big box stores sell these faux stone pavers, and unskilled labor, aka you, can install them nicely. Hint, if you are doing faux stone pavers yourself, always pull a string. Always.
.
Dragon- of- flat is next. How to 3-D the walls at the front door? Add a bell to the wall, preferably to the right of the door. Either historic or artisan, and scaled properly. Example, at bottom.
.
Dragon downspout, another common issue. But whoa, the white downspout at left corner. This situation a bit of an exception. Normally, paint downspouts copper color. Here, the white house trim, tight space is all encompassing. A lot going on with horizontal and vertical white trim, a mosh pit. Boldly creating an exception, I would only paint the section of downspout, copper color, fronting the brick wall. Why? The rest of that downspout is blending with white eve and white vertical trim. Will include the electrical socket with this dragon, at the left of the front door in the brick, paint it copper color too.
.
Dragons on the wall to left of the front door, below. I cannot see clearly what the 2 white rectangle squares are. Paint them same color as shakes, they recede, instead of jump forward, look-at-me-look-at-me.
.
Dragon, lighting. Cannot see a light for the front door. To keep the space feeling large, perhaps a simple recessed lite, in the eve, above the front door or a matching light on the wall, to the left of the front door, matching the light, below, to the right of the garage door.
.
Dragon, dead brown mulch. And it must be replenished yearly. Plant an evergreen groundcover, done. Warm & lush vs. dead & brown.
Pic, above, here.
.
Your turn. What dragons, above, did you see, that I missed? How would you change the dragons I did mention? Please note, I've used affordable changes. Of course I have changes for a different price point. This home is lovely, I would truly like to see a stone path/steps. And, I would add another bonsai espalier conifer, a dwarf conifer, to the left of the front path too. A tighter espalier than the conifer at right of the path.
.

Moved In: ca. 1900 Farmstead
Last week, below, feeding the chickens, an audience arrived. How do animals this large appear at the fence within seconds, no sound?
.
Our views of neighbor's dairy farm. Soon, when more invasives are removed we'll have views of their lake and rolling Piedmont hills, the last, before the coastal plain.
Still moving in, over 3 days almost 50 boxes unpacked. 5 boxes refilled, heavily, and another Goodwill trip taken.
.
How did I ever live without a front porch? Boxes went to the dump each night. Fear, not tidiness. Did not want boxes sitting, and possibly finding a timber rattler in one.
From the boxes, below. Over 90% of china/ironstone unpacked. Dining room has 2 built-in closets, this one, below, was for glass jars of fruit/vegetables. At least that's what markings on the wood shelves report.
.
The door, blessedly was not painted inside. Made of pine, it has been faux painted, over a century ago, like an expensive wood. Rest of the doors in the house were painted white. Will never know if they had all been faux too.
.
Shelves, below, go to 11' ceiling/wrap each side, and filled to overflow.
.
This is solely colored china/ironstone. Agreed, Houston we've got a problem.
.
On the other side of the fireplace, below, blue/white china cabinet.
.
White ironstone still in boxes. Painting to be done before unpacking those. Hardly near the top of our action list.
We've done nothing, below, to the garden, other than take what I brought from my last garden, a cottage garden, to Goodwill, or place on 8 pallets under a century old water oak.
.
Driveway, below, a compacted meadow, and narrow. Perfect for us, not our trucks. Drama ahead.
.
Soon, all foundation plantings, below, will be removed with the Caterpillar. Excepting the camellias, at the end of the front porch, and 2 oleander at my office windows.
.
Beloved & I wanted to get it done today, but finishing the pantry renovation beckons more loudly.
Mentioned above, drama, below.
.
County permit department came, and we were approved to add another driveway.
.
No trees will be cut.
.
In a perfect world this would not be the new drive entry, it affects axis views, cross axis views, & enfilades of placing the new orchard, rose arbor, potager, smoke house. For starters.
.
What I know, for sure, after 3 decades of studying historic gardens, and designing them, issues in reality always make a garden better.
.
Form & function.
.
Beloved needs his driveway, and a barn at its end.
.
Our new drive will curve, below, it has to, you read the list, above, for this new garden room.
.
How long before our new curving drive looks like this, below ?
.
More than a bit impatient.
.
Life is good.

Nurture Your Creativity
Ca. 1950 ranch. Front yard, house on the golf course.
.
Drawn on site. Folding table/chair moved a dozen times.
.
Don't mess with how I work.
.
How the potter molds clay, similar to how I design.
.
Feet in the garden, eyes/mind/Spirit/hand, in symphony.
.
Performing.
More regions of the brain activated, than sitting in the office on a computer.
Designing on the computer would be like playing the violin by hooking it up to wires and tapping on the computer keyboard to get the sweetest sounds played. Not !
Whence my creativity, I know. And, nurture.
Within that zone of creativity, is, I imagine, what others gain from cocaine. Don't know, never tried it. Don't need to, got better.
"Some get a kick from cocaine**
I'm sure that if I took even one sniff
That would bore me terrific'ly too
Yet I get a kick out of you." Cole Porter
Each time a plan completed the awe in time. Felt like seconds, yet hours passed. Little in life allows me to forget time, or hunger.
.
" My general formula for my students is "Follow your bliss." Find where it is, and don't be afraid to follow it.
Joseph Campbell
The Power of Myth
pp. 120, 149 "
.
.
Great fear, indeed. Campbell should have added some in your life add to that fear, not trusting the path you've chosen.
.
My father was horrified at my career choice, and embarrassed. And vocal. My engineering degree unused, the horticulture degree supporting me.
.
What I do for a living, and how I do it, are the best life choices, for me. Bucking my dad literally made me ill at times.
.
Best choice I've ever made, and the hardest.

Design: Hired to Solve Problems
A current job with incredible modern ca. 1970 architecture, revived with a superior architect ca. 2014, has major challenges.
.
Garbage cans, 4 of the hurly-burly-honkers, in front of the house.
.
And.
.
Minimal parking trying to shoot you & your car off a cliff.
.
Welcome home.
Have never dealt with this parking problem.
.
Solution?
.
Balls or low flat planters.
.
.
Have gathered several resources for both and look forward to what the client chooses.
.
There is more than 1 right answer.
.
Better a car is dented than shot over the hill.
.
I adore problem gardens.
.
I'm hired to solve problems.
.
Balls with plinths would be awful, want 3 balls, top pic, without plinths.
.
If they choose the low planter, I do like its plinth. And want a round large ball of chicken-wire covered in small leaf ivy and drip irrigation.
.
Their lifestyle is more suited to the Balls. Less maintenance.

The Proper Direction of Stewardship in a Garden
"We discover G*d's presence inside whenever we override our ego's pride and courageously put aside all that we hide." Rabbi David Aaron
From the mailbox & gravel drive, above, my best work begins.
.
Getting here was decades. Learning simplicity & the humility to let the site speak without reference to my
skills. Honestly, I wonder how Providence has time for anyone else, attention lavished upon my character defects never wains. .
Nor must I 'own' this site. My pride/ego is rooted in the work. A walled orchard is built, a gravel drive spread, potager planted and more, and with each, they are taken by the owner's hands before my feet leave the site.
.
I'm in love with this site, and so is the owner. It is very much the 3 of us. That is how strongly we relate to these acres. She is a good steward of her acres and in return I get to watch her acres in stewardship of her.
.
Gifts of loving these acres arrive in many forms & layers. Telling us we are doing the right thing/s.
.
Tasha Tudor's favorite line of poetry, 'take joy', in action. Joy is always there, but it must be taken.
.
What does any of this have to do with you? Stewardship. Not your stewardship of the garden. But the stewardship your garden has for you. Do you have that in your life? Are you in relationship with your garden? Does it fill you with joy, enrich your spirit, give you energy just seeing it from the windows of your home? Good news, it's not about acres & money. It's putting the garden into relationship with your home & life with historic templates.
.
This reads a bit like an altar call. Ironic, she says her deep feeling with her garden is 'abiding', I feel 'atonement' in mine.

Port Cachere: Before + After
I was hired to 'refresh' the landscape.
.
Leaving the port cachere as-is was not an option. This is their main family door.
.
We went shopping at the Americas Mart in downtown Atlanta last month sourcing merchandise. Not everything had arrived by this week but enough to get started, below.
This table is temporary, above-below, a very nice temporary. Soon, once a vintage large French buffet is sourced I'll get you more pics.
I made do with the few pots/flowers she had last Monday, above/below.
Small moments of beauty, above.
.
As she gets into her car to leave, and then returns, her port cachere is embracing arms for going into the world & returning from the world. A matriarch in every layer of her life, she has a lot going on and appreciates all Providence provides. It's in the small moment thanks are deeply felt.

Do You Know When to Edge a Gravel Drive?
Soon the crape myrtles will arc & touch over the gravel lane.
Designing this century old property back-to-its-history the edges of the gravel lane, above, have been designed with extreme concern. Perhaps you think they are undone? Not considered? Messy? Amazing how subdivision landscape design taints perceptions. I can see Flannery O'Conner walking down this lane not a curbed concrete ribbon in one of today's subdivisions.
Yet, at the end of the crape myrtle lane, above, a parking court is tucked in with neatly clipped hedges & gravel edged with cobblestones. Formality. Bang. Huge garden design decisions not meant to be 'noticed', but, deeply intuited. Even by those not interested in gardens.

Driveway Planting
This was lawn, below, with a view down the cul-de-sac & myriad houses.
"I want a better view than this", was my thought a decade ago.
And, I want hydrangeas decadently gracing the side of my car as I pull into the garage.

Everything shown was planted as 1 gallons.

Quaint Trick to Nestle Your Focal Points
Why do most focal points look like projectiles from Mars that burned thru the atmosphere and landed in someones yard?
Studying the best focal points in historic gardens across Europe for 20+ decades I noticed a quaint trick to nestle focal points into a garden. I call it the rule of, just-let-it-touch.
.
Had to smile when I discovered Martha Stewart doing it, above.
.
Her pruner knows EXACTLY how to just-let-it-touch.
.
Martha's blog has numerous slides with most posts that load quickly. If you loved a good slide show, back in the day, her presentations are the closest I've seen.

Basement Door is now the Dowager's Porch
It's common to see a basement door with lawn. And nothing else.
Mother-in-law Suite doesn't aptly describe this rendition.
Common furnishings, off the shelf shutters, a simple arbor, concrete pavers & voila !
Color theme was chosen and leveraged with punches of yellow.
Boxwoods, liriope, hollies prettier AND easier to maintain than ubiquitous lawn. Notice, above, the garbage can?
Between driveway & Dowager's Porch is a tiny foyer, above. Gravel, above, pure brilliance.
.
Most basement doors are the throw-away-zone. Worse, the criminal zone.

Choose a Theme then Overdose
Choose a theme, Overdose on your Theme.
.
Orchard House, (aka my starter home in a working class neighborhood of cluster homes ca. 1986, today.)
Feng shui has it right about gardens, better than any garden class, 'you must be able to flow easily around your property.' Like Mrs. Wilcox I adore walking round my garden. E. M. Forster knew women. Coop, below, is mostly rescued materials. Why not boxwood, roses, itea, hydrangea, camellia, daphne? The coop is worthy.
View across the drive, below, with front loading garage. Some jurisdictions have outlawed my type of home. Too unfriendly. Garagecentric. No worries, it is my starter home, here 5 years & off to something more worthy of my magnificence.
It's obvious I had to do more growing than the garden.
I'm particularly pleased with this bit at the side of my garage, above. Though the white roses lost their graft and only the root stock is left. Reminds me of an old vicarage wall .
.
Did you see the neighbor's houses? Why would you? You've entered my world. An old cottage...... and become lost in my theme.

Starter home to million plus, Americans love their foundation plantings. Why? Rows of green meatballs planted by the builder, pruned ad nauseam for decades showing off the enabling co-dependent relationship serving neither party.

Choosing Swing Open Garage Doors
I'm hunting garage doors that swing open. The garage is a charming 1945 cinder block with low sloped roof. Privacy is an issue, and money.
Will use a frosted glass.

Formalities & Rusticities
A woodland entry was added to their property, alleviating traffic issues at the family entry. Formal aspects abound elsewhere. Keeping RUSTICITIES balances the whole. Don't know about Formalities & Rusticities? Read your Jane Austen again, she certainly understood. Her sanctimonious characters were certainly of the formalities-only-school.
I used cedars, enlarging a natural drift. Stone from the site & fallen tree debris, above. What you won't see along the lovely Woodland Entry, below,
is what I've hidden. Modern necessities: satellite, power box & etc.

Since we've created this entry & completed the Landscape Design, amplifying Rusticities, she told me it's now her favorite way to enter her property. A new way of seeing her home.

And thankful for a client trusting me with a few rocks, tree debris & her own wild cedar trees. Rumpelstiltskin was conjuring the wrong form of gold. This is the gold.
